Quick – need a character name?
Then use the random name generator.

Or go to the Social Security database to find names that were popular in a given year. [Full disclosure: April reached its peak in the early 1990s. I seldom meet a woman by age with my name.]

For my YAs, I page through my kid's school directories.

Do you have any favorite ways for naming your characters?

I like the website nine.frenchboys.net. I actually have a list of 13 websites that generate names. Some of them are pretty silly, though. I've looked through my old yearbooks. But I don't find the variety of ethnic names that kids have today. I tend to like to use ethnic or exotic sounding names.
I don't know anyone else with the name April....I do, however know a few Marlas (oddly enough) around my age group.

I actually programmed my own name generator in Python. It accepts text files so you don't have to change the code. I <3 my name generator. :)

I hate naming characters, so I just bookmarked both of those sites!

I quite often use first or last names of friends (or people I don't like, depending on the character - great revenge factor!)

I feel like my horizons aren't big enough - I keep coming back to the same names.

Ok, one more thought on this subject....
I went to Lisa Jackson's website(http://www.lisajackson.com) and she had a great idea for coming up with names. A contest. (That would make a fabulous edition to your website.) Kids and adults alike love the idea of contributing a name to someone's book. And you'll get a plethera of names to keep on hand for future books.
