I am probably an idiot, but...
I'm paying my kid to read. To read, to exercise, and to practice the mandolin. Kid wanted to save up for a bass guitar.

Now kid is leaping through books. Doing the kind of reading I didn't used to have to be bribed to do. And kid sounds pretty good on the mandolin, too.

On another note - has anyone bought a cheap bass lately (like under $200) that they liked?

Five years ago I would have been horrified. Now? Bribery? Yea...I get it!

Once maybe I would have said no - but I want to make sure she does these things, and hopefully learns to love them.

My parents paid me to read. A penny a page. And I love it. I earned so much money and read so many books, and wouldn't you know it...? I love reading. I now I even write them. Or attempt to anyway.

Happy reading!

Now I don't feel so guilty. It's weird I have to bribe her But she skateboards and snowboards with no fear, and that would have taken an unbelievable amount of money for me to try.

Sounds like a good bribe to me.
Son#1, who plays guitars, says that the Silvertone bass is a good one. We bought it for him for right under $200, I'm sorry I don't remember the model name/number. He also says that Dean is a good brand, but he recommends that you stay away from cheap Fenders. ESP also makes decent, cheap basses.

Does he have any opinions about Arbor?

Sorry, he says that he is not familiar with Arbor.

I paid my kids an allowance for doing chores. Not for reading, though. They're adults now, and both of them enjoy reading.

My husband's a bass player. He said you've got to spend more than $200.00 if you want something with decent feel and sound, unless you buy something used.

Kid is only 12 and as a result can have fleeting enthusiasms (turtle, anyone?).

So...what's the going rate for bribery?

About a dollar a half hour. I would have set my rate lower if I had known how successful it was going to be.

If your son isn't totally disinterested in (or nauseated by) roots music (AKA traditional American music) and if you have Netflix, get the DVD of Doc Watson and David Grisman in concert. Grisman is amazing on the mandolin, and Doc Watson, on guitar, is a national treasure. (There's also a video of Grisman with Jerry Garcia.)

We do have Netflix and kid does like roots music, so it will go on the list. But my not very good effort at not sharing too much personal info about kid has worked - because kid is of the girl persuasion.

We reward my son to read too. He's in Grade One and so far isn't enthralled as it's "hard" and Hard is not as fun as Easy.

My husband is not a reader and I hope son is more like my side of the family (bookworm)

No bass....

Janet

I am a sucker for the mandolin. It always reminds me of rain...

She's getting pretty good on it. All the songs have great names, too, like Cuckoo's Nest and Bumblebee in a Jug.
