Don't quit your day job?

Earlier this year, when I had far less time to blog, I ran into several posts about how financially it didn't make much sense to be a writer. One was this which was based on numbers from 2005 and for some reason posits that each novel you write will sell fewer copies than in the past. Then there was this roundup from Galley Cat.

However, I think these posts might be a bit too dire. Way back when I got my first book deal in 1997, it was for $12,000 for the first book and $15,000 for the second, so far more than the $5,000 or $6,000 that many of these examples start with. Maybe mysteries pay a little better than the horror or science fiction they were talking about in the linked articles. And as your career moves along, hopefully your career is building and your backlist is still selling.

Plus there are other ways you can make money as a writer, although none of them are sure things. Audio books, foreign rights, book clubs, movie options. If you write books for kids, especially younger kids, you can get paid to do school visits. (My first five books were for adults, so it was a real shock to learn this.) And books for kids tend to stay in print for a long time. My first YA came out in 2006 and is still, as of today, in print. Anything that has gone out-of-print I have put back up as ebooks. A few times when things were lean I taught classes at my local bookstore.

Nothing is guaranteed, of course, but for past couple of years I have made well more than I did when I worked in corporate communications for a big health care company. I will say that my husband has helped tremendously by having a job with health insurance and regular bi-weekly paychecks. I've also learned that money you don't expect to come in does and money you did expect to come in ends up being delayed for months, but somehow it all balances out.

The one thing I don't like is that it's very hard to crystal ball it, hard to look more than a year into the future. I'm getting better at living with that uncertainty. If you are self-employed, I highly recommend The Money Book for Freelancers, Part-Timers, and the Self-Employed: The Only Personal Finance System for People with Not-So-Regular Jobs. You need to get good at paying your retirement, your taxes, and your emergency fund up front. This book has helped me do that.

Author Jim Hines looked at his finances for 2012 here. He also has a full-time job in addition to his writing.

Anyway, if you are thinking of quitting your day job, don't despair. I believe it is possible. You may find yourself working like a dog, but you'll also be making up stories, your commute will be from your bed to the computer, and you will be your own boss. Even if I was making less (and who knows, I might soon be), I would still say it was worth it.

From late September to late April I worked as I hard as I ever have in my life. I sold a new series on proposal and the first was due January 31. I also had another book due in March, although later the date got pushed back to mid-April. We are talking over 140,000 words. Then just to make things more interesting, one of those books that was nearly finished had to be scrapped and redone, basically starting from the ground up, or close to it.

I had no evenings or weekends. I lay awake in bed at night and counted days and counted words and divided the former into the latter. The number was always discouraging. I read books and articles about how to write faster. I wrote on planes. I wrote in hotel rooms (once on vacation). I wrote in cars, I wrote in the library. I wrote in a coffee shop, at a friend's house, in bed, at my gym, and every Thursday for 16 weeks in a chemo room where my friend was being treated for breast cancer.

And finally, as of April 23, I had everything turned in. I started going to five or six kung fu classes a week, and reading more for pleasure. I cleaned up certain areas of our house. I found boxes of cereal that expired two years ago, articles I used for books that were published five or six years ago.

I just learned one editor is going to give me edits next Monday. The other is giving me edits next Friday. I have a new

book due Oct.1. And another due sometime in February.

I guess it's time to get back in the saddle.

Oh, and I should probably write some talking points for this book I have coming out in four weeks.

There goes the neighborhood

We have lived in this neighborhood for 30 years.

The house we first lived in, the one we shared with two friends, the house that had four bedrooms and when our parents came over we all pretended that we used all four instead of two - it's for sale. I wonder if the sellers know the house's secret, something an elderly neighbor told us when we lived there 30 years ago.

Someone killed himself in that house. Shot himself.

We used to go from room to room, debating which it had been. I don't really believe in ghosts, but it seems like the despair and the horror of that moment of that would linger. We finally decided it was this small bedroom off the garage. It was made of cinderblocks, was always cold, and had tiny windows. It was depressing.

I have no idea if we were right.

A few blocks away, a stout guy with a thick neck lived. He used to stare at me while I ran up or down his street. Just stare. He didn't look away. He made me feel like a piece of meat. I used to feel anxious. I fantasized about flipping him off or yelling at him. I still run down that street now.

Then about four or five years ago, I saw him struggling to put his garbage and recycling bins on the curb. I helped him push them out.

"I see you running all the time," he wheezed. "Good for you. I just had a quadruple bypass. You'll never need one of those." Talking to him made me wonder if he had ever really been the terrible person I thought he was.

I have no idea.

Last week a firetruck passed me while I was running. When I crested the hill, the firetruck was pulling away from the old man's house. An ambulance was out front, lights flashing, and the paramedic was just slamming closed the back gate. Then he got in the ambulance and talked to his partner. He was in no hurry.

This week there's a new car out front, with California plates.

A year or two ago our neighbor died. He was a hoarder who lived alone with his dog. I had only spoken to him a few times. His long driveway was lined nose-to-tail with Vanagons that didn't run. The porch was heaped with black plastic garbage bags. The house was in such bad shape that it was decided to tear it down and start over.

Will I like the new neighbors or will I never really know them?

I have no idea.

This has been an interesting week. There's been a ton of good news:

- The Girl Who Was Supposed to Die got picked up by Scholastic. I wasn't even dreaming of this, because I figured Scary Cover + Character Who Gets Two Fingernails Pulled Out (off camera) = Not a Book Scholastic Would Buy. But I was wrong! Scholastic really gets your books in front of a ton of kids and librarians.

- I've gotten some really amazing fan mail, including one from a formerly reluctant reader who said, "I just wanted to thank you for changing my life! actually enjoy reading now and I'm sure anybody would be surprised to hear that from me!"

- The person that optioned The Night She Disappeared for film has renewed his option. And there might be be more news on a related front soon.

But on Wednesday, I also clicked on a Google Alert for Girl, Stolen. It was a teenager's blog. And she hated Girl, Stolen. And three of her blog readers chimed in saying now they would never want to read the book.

Now you would think that after everything else Girl, Stolen has received:

YALSA Quick Pick

YALSA Best Fiction for Young Adults

Barnes & Noble Top Teen Pick

Named one of the best books of 2012 by Children's Books Ireland

Winner of Maryland's Black-Eyed Susan award

Winner of Missouri's Truman Readers Award

Winner of South Dakota's YARP (Young Adult Reading Program)

Finalist for Worcestershire Teen Book Award in England

Finalist for Oklahoma's Sequoyah Book Award

Finalist for Oregon Book Award

Finalist for New Hampshire's Isinglass Teen Read award

Finalist for Nebraska's Golden Sower award

Chosen for St. Louis Book Battle

Chosen for One Book, One Community in Olney, Illinois

Chosen as a Cafe Book in Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania and Stafford schools and the Central Rappahannock Regional Library in Virigina

ALAN Pick [Assembly on Literature for Adolescents]

Rights sold in the United Kingdom

Rights sold in Germany

Rights sold in Turkey

Audio rights sold to Brilliance

That this would not upset me. But it did.

I'm starting to be old enough that I can figure out why something like that becomes like a pebble in my shoe. And it's because she leveled some criticisms about areas that I always worry about.

So I'm going to try to think about those things when I write my next book. Because even though I've been around this block nearly two dozen times (if you count unpublished books) there are always things I could stand to work on.

So I'm stuck in a small town while my spouse visits his very sick uncle in the hospital. I'm at a library, working on a book. Of course, I had to check out the teen section. And an actual teen was there, a tall girl with dyed stripes in her hair, wearing a dress and footless tights and Keds. She was scanning the shelves. I could see her watching me out of the corner of her eye as I stood behind her, running my eyes over the H's for my own books. And I found two.

I'm an extrovert, so I said, "I hear these two are pretty good," and pointed at them. I've done this before, but I guess not for a while. Because I did what I always do while the person is still wondering "Who is this crazy lady?" I leaned over and picked up one of the books and flipped it open to the back flap.

Only there was no photo. So I frantically picked up the second book. Again, no photo.

"Um, I'm the author," I offered. "Usually there's an author photo at the back."

"Oh," she said in the false brightly cheerful voice you use for demented people when you are hoping they won't attack you, "I'll have to check them out."

I'm now hiding on the other side of the library.

Can you buy your way onto the best seller list?

Can you buy your way onto the best seller list?

Why, yes you can. With enough money, nearly anything is possible. (The Wall Street Journal talked about this a few months ago, back when my free time fell to zero, which was why I haven't brought it up until now.)

Here's part of the article:

"It isn't uncommon for a business book to land on best-seller lists only to quickly drop off. But even a brief appearance adds permanent luster to an author's reputation, greasing the skids for speaking and consulting engagements.... But the short moment of glory doesn't always occur by luck alone. In the cases mentioned above, the authors hired a marketing firm that purchased books ahead of publication date, creating a spike in sales that landed titles on the lists. The marketing firm, San Diego-based ResultSource, charges thousands of dollars for its services in addition to the cost of the books, according to authors interviewed."

Read the rest of the article here. It points out it's particularly easy to game business book bestseller lists, since even a few thousand copies can put you on a list.

I think it would be pretty hard to game any of the NYT's fiction lists. And I'm not just saying that because I've been on one. Given enough money, though, that still might be possible.

Smaller lists can probably be gamed more easily. Someone who had a lot of money (and who was also a good writer) once confided in me that she had gotten on the LA Times list through spreading around her own money to straw buyers who purchased the book.

Later they realized she was part of a family that had gone missing miles away, gone to look for a Christmas tree and disappeared. Her mom's body was found by hunters, and signs pointed to the dad having done it, dropping the girl off, and then taking off. Only two years ago, they found the guy's skull. They now believe someone killed both parents and then dropped off the little girl.

So what if she is 17, moves back to her small town with a new name (from a failed adoption, she's now an emancipated minor), and tries to figure out who did it?

This year has been kind of a blur. I turned in one book January 31st. I turned in a second book April 22nd. I do not recommend this schedule.

During this time, my husband took a new author photo (in a cemetery, which Ithink lends a certain quality).

I also went to New Orleans for a brief vacation that had originally been planned when I thought my books would be done.

Last week, I spent a week in Texas, first doing author visits and then attending IRA. In the evenings I would come back to my hotel room and right for up to six hours while eating food I had bought at a Super Target. (Oh, the glamorous life of an author!)

Even so, I did have a great time - the only thing that wasn't fun was having a water bottle leak onmy

hotel bed, which caused my iPhoneto become more like an iAquarium.

At IRA, I got to meet literacy coach Joy Olenick from Iowa, who even brought along a poster her students had made. A few weeks ago, Joy sent me this note: "Thank you for writing Girl,Stolen! I am a literacy coach at a middle school in Council Bluffs, IA. This book has ignited a love for literacy in several students and teachers in my building. I have witnessed students hanging in the classroom after the bell to read just a few more sentences before having to move on to the next class. This week I have overheard students excitedly sharing which page number they were on and searching for others as far as they were in the text so that they could talk about what had just happened! One student, knowing that I had read the novel this summer, mouthed to me "Mrs Olenick page 183 O-M-G!!" To which I whispered back "Keep reading! It gets even better!!!" We now have a waiting list of students who want to read Girl, Stolen next in their literature discussion group. A teacher who is retiring this year thanked me for sharing the book with her and endorses it to her students as the best book she has read in her career as a Language Arts teacher."

Then right after I got home I saw a Tweet about Girl, Stolen. It had won a the Teen Choice award from South Dakota. That's the third state award for a book a lot of folks passed on.

I took this week off from writing, but come Monday I'm back in the saddle.

You can help turn The Iron King into a manga/graphic novel series!

Julie Kagawa is working with Bluewater Comics to turn her book THE IRON KING into a four-part Manga/graphic novel series.

Publishing comic books is a pricey endeavor (no surprise there), so they're trying to raise the funds to cover the costs up front. Initially, they had a very ambitious Kickstarter campaign -- but not being Veronica Mars, they didn't make it. So they adjusted the budget, found ways to cut costs significantly, and have relaunched on Indiegogo. They still have a ton of awesome prizes for anyone who contributes -- and they have a much more attainable goal. But because they lost all the Kickstarter pledges, they're having a hard time getting our numbers back up.

They need YOUR help letting readers know about THE IRON KING Manga project, and asking them to contribute whatever they can. Even $1 will help them reach their goal.

The Indiegogo campaign can be viewed here: http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/the-iron-king-manga-series

And Colleen's death is an eerie echo of the murder of another Seattle prosecutor who was also gunned down at home four years earlier.

Mia’s life has already been turned upside down by the recent death of her husband. Now a single parent to a teenager and a toddler, she is struggling to hold on to their house. Meanwhile, her son has turned moody and secretive, and her daughter is suffering from mysterious nightmares.

When the DA asks her to head up the investigation into Colleen’s death and its connections to the earlier murder, Mia agrees—if he’ll also let her investigate the suicide of a teenager who may have been bullied to death. Partnered with irascible homicide detective Charlie Carlson, Mia finds that many people could have wanted Colleen dead, including people in Mia's life she thought she could trust.

As Mia races to figure out who gunned down Colleen in cold blood, she uncovers more secrets than she bargained for. Has she been wrong to trust those closest to her?

Will she put the pieces together before it’s too late? A Matter of Trust is a riveting tale of love, loyalty—and murder.

Reviews
"This suspenseful first in a new series from Wiehl and Henry (Eyes of Justice and three other Triple Threat novels) opens with a bang. While Mia Quinn, a prosecutor in the King County (Wash.) district attorney's office, is on the phone with a fellow prosecutor, Colleen Miller, someone shoots Colleen dead. Mia's boss, DA Frank D'Amato, asks her to lead the investigation into Colleen's death, which could have a link to the murder of another prosecutor four years earlier. Meanwhile Mia is also working the case of a bullied teenager who committed suicide, and trying to raise her teenage son and preschool daughter, as well as coping with her husband's death. Trust becomes the centerpiece--who deserves it and the betrayal that trust sometimes leads to--in a story full of twists and turns that also offers a hint of future romance for Mia."
- Publishers Weekly

"An exciting new series with prosecutor Mia at the center. The mystery is engaging and not easy to figure out. The side storyline about bullying is timely and will hit close to home for many."
- Four stars, Romantic Times

"A Matter of Trust is a thoroughly satisfying mystery, well paced and tightly written. Mia and Charlie are intriguing characters, and readers can hope they’ll return in future novels."
- CBA Retailers + Resources

Celebrating a first book on behalf of an author who can’t be with us Meet Bridget Zinn and Poison

Meet my friend Bridget Zinn.

This week marks the release date of Bridget's first book, a sweet fantasy called Poison. She died from colon cancer in 2011, when she was just 33. She not only wrote about magic, but she looked pretty magical herself. She had beautiful red hair and that creamy skin you only see on redheads. The inside matched the outside. She had a sense of mischief, and a sense of joy. If I had to use one word to describe Bridget, it would be vibrant.

When she was first hospitalized but before they knew exactly what was wrong, she and her boyfriend Barrett got married right there in her hospital room. They kept getting married in what they called The Summer of Love. Everything was the occasion for a party, like the “Fatten Bridget up for Chemo Party” with all kinds of decadent treats. And Bridget kept her sense of humor, even when she was in the emergency room with some frightening complications and another woman tried to claim that SHE was actually Bridget Zinn. As they fought the cancer, Barrett and Bridget spent long hours in various waiting rooms and hospital rooms, and I’m proud to have suggested many quality online time killers, like CakeWrecks.com and DamnYouAuto Correct.com.

About the book

Horn Book says: "Sixteen-year-old Kyra is a girl with more than her share of secrets. Living in the world of witches, dwarves, potion masters, shape shifters, and the like, she is reluctant to trust anyone, even her best friend and the future queen, Ariana. Readers learn early on that Kyra has attempted to murder Ariana, and we spend the rest of the book trying to figure out why Kyra shot a deadly potion at her…and why, when she has never missed a target, she missed that one. Twists and turns, including dramatic cliffhanger chapter endings, quick getaways, disguises, tricked-out witches, a princess-seeking pig, and one especially clever and handsome boy make this a fine rollicking adventure from start to finish. The author's use of thoroughly modern language in a magical setting adds to the charm. The characters are complicated and act in flawed human ways, making mistakes in judgment that make the plot twists all the more realistic. Kyra and Ariana are strong girls in the Vesper Holly tradition—not giving in to sexist social requirements and, thank goodness, never fighting over Fred, the love interest. Zinn has crafted a marvelous tale, more Harry Potter than Twilight. Readers will be sad that, due to her untimely death, Zinn's more-than-promising debut novel will be her last."— Robin L. Smith, The Horn Book

A taste of Poison

Here’s part of my favorite section of Poison:

Kyra stripped off her black thieves clothing, feeling like she was taking off a layer of armor between herself and the world. Her clothes had been treated with potions to repel water, but it was better not to get them wet at all—she hated the feeling when pockets of water got trapped between the fabric and her skin. She’d end up taking them off to get dry anyway.

Maybe it would have been worth a little discomfort. She was completely exposed standing on the riverbank in her undergarments, the grass prickly beneath her bare feet.

Why did she have to be wearing these underthings?

A breeze caught at her shift and set the ribbons trembling. She briskly rubbed her hands over her arms to warm them up and bent down to her clothes.

Not only were they the most ridiculous, feminine, beribboned bit of foolishness that ever existed, but they’d been a gift from Princess Ariana.

Ariana had specially commissioned them for Kyra’s fifteenth birthday the fall before, and she’d embroidered them herself. In none-too-neat stitching the word kitty— Ariana’s nickname for Kyra—was stitched across the left bosom of the waist-length shift. On the right bosom was a horribly stitched cat. It appeared to be winking. Or suffering some sort of nervous facial tic. A ribbon wrapped around the torso and tied into a fat bow beneath the breasts, and below that was a whole panel of see-through lace that ended just beneath her belly button. And the lower half was almost worse—cut off high on the thigh and festooned with ruffles all across the bottom.

And of course you can guess that someone sees Kyra in this ridiculous and revealing outfit. Someone male.

Bridget's last Facebook post read: "Sunshine and a brand new book. Perfect."

So that’s what I’m bringing you today: A little bit of metaphorical sunshine from talking bout Bridget and Bridget’s brand new book!

Celebrate the book

There's an online Shindig party tomorrow night (kind of like Skype but for an audience from all over). It's Tuesday, March 12, 8:30-9:30 pm, Eastern Standard Time : http://shindig.com/event/bridgetzinn

If you live in Portland, there's a great event at A Children's Place Bookstore on Saturday, March 16, featuring: Carolyn Conahan, Virginia Euwer Wolff, Ruth Feldman, Susan Fletcher, April Henry, Victoria Jamieson, Rosanne Parry, Sara Ryan, Lisa Schroeder, Inara Scott, Laini Taylor, Jen Violi, Emily Whitman and Johanna Wright.
