Cool YA news

- Can you predict the end of a relationship using a mathematical equation? Click here to see. What a cool way for John Green to promote An Abundance of Katherines. [Full disclosure: I was too scared to do it. I've got 20 years into my relationship, and I sincerely hope there will be no dumper/dumpee.]

- The Pentagon has revealed that the Harry Potter books are the most popular in the library of the Guantanamo Bay detention center.

- I really, really wish I could have gone to this. The Mountains & Plains Booksellers Association show held in Denver last weekend, had three YA authors. an editor, a publicity manager and a marketing manager discuss ways to reach teen readers. The panel was called “Capturing the I and My Generation (Ipods, I Ms and MySpace).”

The authors were Barry Lyga, The Astonishing Adventures of Fan-Boy and Goth Girl ( [Full disclosure: I am a very faint acquaintance of his!] , John Smelcer, The Trap, and Patricia McCormic, Sold (about a young woman in Nepal forced into prostitution).

Alessandra Balzer, executive editor of Hyperion Books for Children, Jennifer Abbots, publicity manager for Henry Holt, and Lisa DiSarro, senior marketing manager at Houghton Mifflin, talking about the strategies behind publishing and marketing books for teen readers. Topics included publishing a series vs. stand-alone titles, releasing in hardcover vs. original trade paper, organizing author tours vs. holding authorless events, and even what category name to give to titles intended for teenage readers.

A question: does anyone know how I can get my hands on what was said at this meeting?
