Something I wrote made a tiny change in someone's life

I recently got this email:

"I've been meaning to tell you something for a couple of years. Buried Diamonds had a major effect on me. It was a really wonderful book, and there was one line that has stuck with me, and in a way changed my behavior: it's when Claire's roommate says something to the effect that people don't know what starving is. I never say I'm starving anymore, I say I'm really hungry, but that's it. Anyway, I just wanted you to know that."

Claire's roommate Charlie was in a concentration camp and later talked about how lightly people used words like "starving." But I never imagined that something my imaginary character said would actually have an effect on real people.

I guess words do have power after all.
