Part of the deal with the class I'm teaching is that those who wanted could submit the first 10 pages of their novel for my comments. In addition to being a writer, I'm also a reviewer for the Oregonian. When you have as many books as I do show up on your front porch, a book is lucky if I give it 10 pages to grab me. Sometimes just the premise is so clichéd that it gets passed over right away.

Of the manuscripts I've looked at, a couple need a lot of work, and several ranged up and down the middle ground from okay to pretty good. And one was damn near perfect. If the next 250 pages are the same quality as the first 10, then get this author an agent and a publisher.

I feel excited as if I were an agent or editor, which I have no wish to be.
