James Bernard Frost lives in my town, although I don't know him. He has a new book out, World Leader Pretend which he says is "about a two-headed boy, a man who pretends to be a girl, a girl who pretends to be a man, a coyote, a century plant, a saguaro that says "Good," mountain biking, an electric baby, a poetry slam gone awry, an Antarctic welder who does stupid penguin tricks, and the untimely demise of a dragon."

In other words, it's about online gaming. Anyway, here's a very funny post on how St. Martins screwed him over, cover-wise. I've been given horrible covers by St. Martins, too, but luckily my agent went to bat for me and got much better ones. Since his blog has the subtitle "The life and opinions of an agentless novelist" I'm guessing he doesn't have one.

On the left-hand side of the screen, you can see the cover he commissioned for the book as a giant sticker. Oddly enough, it's by Dave Warnke and my kid just bought a Dave Warnke skateboard off ebay around Christmas. I'd never heard of him before. It's like when you buy a new car and you see it everywhere you go.
