A sad day

Well, they did it. They closed the libraries in Jackson County, Oregon. It's complicated to explain why - the money came from the Feds, and it's now all caught up in fighting about the war. My brother, his wife, and two children came to mourn the libraries' passing and ended up being interviewed for the paper and then quoted in an influential book blog.

The newspaper article said in part, "Torrey Jakubcin was celebrating his 14th birthday at the Medford library on Friday. But the faithful library patron said he didn't feel much like celebrating. "This is horrible," he said. "I'm not sure what I'll do now. I just finished a term paper on California condors. I wouldn't have been able to do it without the library.""

It's more than just the libraries. No federal funds means they have announced they will no longer prosecute meth crimes. The jail beds have been drastically reduced and will only be for the worst offenders.

Last night, my brother Joe told me they had put their house on the market. They plan to move to Texas. This saddens me so much, in so many ways.
