Beverly Cleary – a hometown girl

While she doesn’t live here anymore, Beverly Clearly spent most of her life in Portland. Not only does Portland have a Beverly Cleary Sculpture Garden with sculptures of Ramona, Henry and Ribsy, one of the library branches has a two terra cotta busts of Ramona - one happy and one sad.

In third grade, my kid was lucky enough to have Sharon Gray as a teacher. Twenty years earlier, Beverly had spent two weeks observed Ms. Gray’s third grade class to help her write one of her Ramona books.

Interestingly, as a child, Beverly was placed in a “low reading circle.” Shows how wrong labels can be.

Here's a Newsweek interview with her , published around the time of her 90th birthday. She just turned 91. [Full random disclosure: our birthdays are just two days apart!]
