Do you live in Texas?

Shock Point is on the Texas Taysha’s list. It’s also on the short list for the ALA's Ten Best Books for Teens. And during Teen Read Week, October 14-21 I’ll be in Texas and making presentations at schools in Taylor and Liberty Hill. I’m already booked for four days of that week, but if you know of a school that might want to join in the fun for the fifth day, have the librarian contact Kathryn.Hurley@us.penguingroup.com.

Got a debut book coming out in 2008? This award might have your name on it

There's a new literary award for YA lit. It honors Bill Morris, who was a vice president and director lof library promotion at HarperCollins Children’s Books. He died in 2003. The William C. Morris YA Debut Award will be given once a yeart o a previously unpublished author “who has made a strong literary debut in writing for young adult readers,” beginning in January 2009. The award committee will start its deliberations a year earlier, in January 2008.

The award is funded by YALSA’s William C. Morris Endowment, which received more than $400,000 from Morris’s estate. Morris earmarked the money for ALA to fund programs, publications, events, or awards in promotion of children’s literature.

[Full disclosure: Too bad I'm no literary virgin!]
