Patterson launches Read Kiddo Read

James Patterson has long used some of his millions to promote reading. Now he’s got a new project called Read Kiddo Read. Publishers Weekly says “By December, with almost no fanfare except for a mention in an interview with Al Roker and an ad in People magazine, the site attracted 20,000 visitors. It brings together reviews for books for newborns to teens, interviews with bestselling children’s authors like Jeff Kinney and Rick Riordan, and a book blog with reading lists by children’s literature consultant Judy Freeman, author of Books Kids Will Sit Still For.” [Full disclosure: that doesn’t sound like that big of a number of visitors – this blog, without Al Roker or People, gets about 20,000 unique visitors a month.]

This is shocking - PW lays off Sara Nelson

When you think Publishers Weekly, you also think editor-in-chief Sara Nelson. But not any more. They laid her off, according to this article in the NY Times, which says, "Ms. Nelson, 52, spent four years heading up the magazine and had become a lively presence within the industry, speaking frequently on panels and advocating forcefully for books in her weekly column."

Other people who got the ax include executive editor Daisy Maryles, bookselling editor Kevin Howell, children's reviews editor Elizabeth Devereaux and director of business development Rachel Dicker, according to Shelf Awareness.

And what is really, really sad is that Sara Nelson's column this week was about how she was feeling more hopeful.
