Tonya Harding never fit in with the figure skating crowd. She was amazingly athletic, but she came from the wrong side of the tracks and looked it. She persisted in smoking even though she had asthma. And she became one of Oregon’s most infamous people when her skating rival got whacked in the knee with a metal pipe. A number of mistakes followed: the release of the wedding night sex tape, the boxing match, the time she threw a hubcap at her boyfriend. Now she’s been on HBO’s Real Sports. Hard living seems to be taking it’s toll, although she ‘s got a perfect manicure and bangs still showing crimp marks from the curling iron
My brushes with Tonya:
- Driving behind her when she was in a pickup with those jacked up huge tires taller than your head.
- Seeing her teaching a girl how to iceskate at Lloyd Center, and trying to ignore the people yelling her name.
- Once she was hospitalized after she claimed to have been "kidnapped." I worked for the hospital, and got a call from some drive-time radio station in Ohio. Even though it wasn’t legal to do it without permission, I realized that they were broadcasting their call with me live. I began to speak in the most boring, slowest way imaginable, until I took all the fun out of it for them.
