Oakmont

Right after Malice Domestic, one of the biggest mystery fan conventions (especially for people who enjoy things a little less hard-boiled), there’s something called The Festival of Mystery in Oakmont. PA. Authors often carpool from one event to the next. Last year, the 13th edition of the event featured 41 writers and more than 350 readers.

This article features a ton of authors I know pretty well, including Marica Talley, Rhys Bowen, and Elaine Viets.

What do we know about book customers?

Shelf Awareness had a series of interesting articles on the state of the publishing biz. Part of it talked about sales trends. Another talked about customers:
- The average book reader last year was 45 years old. Some 65% of buyers are women, who tend to buy in higher volumes than men.
- Of all Americans 13 or older, 50% bought a book last year. The average age of the most frequent book buyer is in the 50s.
- More than 50% of book buys are impulse purchases.
