Query letters: what to do (and what not to do)

The Evil Editor [full disclosure: on whom I secretly have a crush] gives you some query letters and then rewrites them to be better here. [Note that this is just a sampling of what Evil Editor does - this is one blog you really should be following.] And agent Nathan Bransford shares a query that recently won his heart – and a contract - here

I only make this once a year

but boy, is it worth it.

It's the raspberry tart recipe from one of the Silver Palate Cookbooks. It takes a long time to make, and it's got so much sugar and butter that just looking at it could probably raise your cholesterol 200 points.

And yet.

It is delicious.

On my first trip to New York, when I was in my early 20s, I dragged my husband (then boyfriend) up to the Silver Palate, like a pilgrimage to Mecca. I don't know what I expected. Maybe a lot of items for carryout. A chance to talk to Julie and Sheila in person. Instead there were a few jars of jam and salad dressing. It was mostly a place to order catering.

I understand the two women later quarreled and their friendship broke apart. But they left behind three great cookbooks.
