Want ads

One of my publishers had all of their novelists read Janet Burroway's Writing Fiction. [Full disclosure: the book is expensive! I think it is used as a textbook. Try getting it from the library or half.com.]

One writing exercise from the book that I liked was this one. I think it would be fun to try with a group:

"Look through a page of newspaper want ads. Imagine the person who placed the ad to sell the ticket, car, unused wedding dress, etc. Conjure up that character and the story line that led him or her to do this. A second group should brainstorm the character who wants to buy the object, along with that person’s motive. Individually, write the scene of a meeting between the two characters."

The Arms Race

I've been taking a boot camp class since December. There's a beautiful woman in it who is in her late 20s. She has great arms, and uses 8-pound weights (the weights at class come in 1, 2, 3, 5, and 8 pounds). Yesterday, I decided to step it up and grabbed the 8-pound weights. It was hard (and sometimes very hard) but I persevered. In your face, 28 year old!

Then I looked over at her. She was using 10-pound weights. They don't even have 10-pound weights. She must have brought them from home.

Your friends and neighbors

My friend and neighbor Liz Prato has an article on Salon about what it was like for a friend of hers to have narrowly missed being on Flight 103, the one that went down over Lockerbie. Thirty-five people she went to school with were on the flight.

Like all the articles I've seen on Salon, it seems to have attracted a number of commenters who just want to promote their own particular political view and argue with one another, not react to the piece itself.
