After a 30-year run, the Walkman is being phased out.
I'm old enough to remember how revolutionary it was. I still remember sitting in the library at the University of Oregon and marveling at the Walkman my boyfriend's roommate, John Howell (or Yawn Howl as we called him) had brought back from Japan. This was in 1978 or 1979, before it was available in the United States. It had cost an amazing amount of money, but John's dad was an oilman, so I guess they could afford it.
As soon as I could afford one (which took a while), I got one. Then a disc player. Then an iPod. Being able to run to music I choose (and not just whatever is playing on the radio) has been a godsend.
