Mother knows best

A literary agent did a little riff on that “All I needed to know, I learned in kindergarden” idea, only hers involves taking things your mother might say to you and applying them to the writing life.

For example:

“Mother: “If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.”

"Yes, it can be infuriating when you see someone else on the playground getting all the toys and attention, but that's no reason to push them into the sandbox or tell everyone they're still wetting their bed at age 10.”

Learn from my mistakes

My character's current name is Cady Thomas. But that's going to have to change. Because it just begets all this awkwardness. Her family's house could the "the Thomas's house" or "the Thomas' house," but that just looks awkward. And speaking of them in the plural - the Thomases? - doesn't roll off the keyboard either.
