Cruel twist of fate

A woman in my town died of a brain tumor last month, about three weeks before the publication of her first book of poems. She didn’t see a finished copy, but was able to hold the galleys in her hand before she died.

In a cruel twist of fate, her tumor left her with aphasia. “She could understand conversations but couldn't form words, couldn't speak and get out the thoughts that bubbled up inside her. Working on the poems in her first book, fulfilling her lifelong dream, she relied on friends to help her make the changes she wanted in order to get everything right. Sometimes that involved an elaborate game of charades, going over a dozen possibilities until she could indicate the best one.”

She was my age.
