Faith Sale

I'm cleaning out years - and years and years - of paperwork. In one file, labeled "agent" I have letters from my agent, back from before the Internet. And of course I'm keeping the one asking for my first mansuscript.

I had forgotten that she had sent it to Faith Sale, but there's the rejection note, signed "Faith." She died about five years later, in 1999, at 63. She was known as a writer's advocate, the best kind of editor. She edited Amy Tan and Alice Hoffman and (I'm pretty sure) Lee Smith. Kaye Gibbons and Kurt Vonnegut.

I used to look in the authors' notes of books I loved to see whom they thanked, and so often it was Faith Sale.

I wish I could have been edited by her. Read more about her <href="http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9e0ce7d7163bf932a15756c0a964958260&sec=&spon=&pagewanted=all"> here.</a>
