Tip for authors: whatever you do, don't piss off gamers

Okay, a few months back a self-help author appeared on Fox News and dissed this game called Mass Effect. She had never played the game, but she mischaracterized how it worked, saying it objectified women. It probably seemed like a good idea at the time, like a way to plug her book "The Cult of Perfection: Making Peace with Your Overachiever." I would guess she was echoing what someone else had said.

But she was wrong. And gamers reacted. In January, the NYT said they had flooded the user reviews on Amazon, with 412 of 472 being only one star. Thousands had tagged the book with words like "ignorant," and "garbage."

Since then, it seems like Amazon has tried to clean out those who haven't read the book, which I guess some people admitted in their reviews (which is kind of ironic, because the gamers were originally angry that the author had spoken out about a game she had never played). Now it's down to 69 reviews, nearly all of them overwhelming negative, and I would guess most of them were written by people who had never read the book.

And let me just say: I have the utmost respect for gamers, authors, and Amazon. So no one get mad at me. Please. I'm begging you.
