For just $25, someone can make or break your book

The National Book Critics Circle blog said that a NBCC member had received a letter from Publishers Weekly reviews saying that “Any reviews assigned after June 15 will be billed at $25 per review. However, you will be credited as a contributor in issues where your reviews appear. Please know that we value the work you do for us.”

A long time ago, I’d heard that Kirkus reviewers only got $40, which perhaps explained why the reviews were so angry. At $25 per review, you’re basically talking minimum wage or less. At that point, maybe it’s a labor of love?
