I’ve heard the term “greenwashing” applied to products that aren’t really green at all, just wanting to wear the mantle of being good for the environment. I haven’t heard it used for an action that someone wants to justify, so they call it “green” but it seems that book sellers in the UK are accusing Hachette Livre of just that.

Hachette had planned to make all backlist non-returnable (most books can be returned to the publisher for credit). Publishers Lunch reported, “At the Booksellers Association conference in the UK, there has been a lot of resistance to Hachette Livre's plans to transition to selling all backlist on a non-returnable basis, along with the way that such proposals are being "unilaterally imposed...and justified by a green excuse."”
