A fresh approach

I’m on the verge of signing a contract with my fifth publisher. [Jodi Picoult has had something like nine.] While all publishers are unique in their own way, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the folks at Thomas Nelson.

1. They have a schedule and they keep to it. They send you a timeline of when everything will happen, and by golly, it does.
2. They send authors tips on how to get permission to quote lyrics. [My advice: don’t.]
3. They have a form you can use to solicit blurbs from other authors.
4. But most surprising and delightful: they have an optional quarterly conference call where novelists call in to discuss a writing craft book we’ve all read. This fall, it will be a chunk of Writing Fiction: A Guide to Narrative Craft by Janet Burroway and Elizabeth Stuckey-French.
