Today is Ursula K. Le Guin's birthday

And I even know where she lives! [Full disclosure: I have never been inside and I don't know her personally. She lives in NW Portland, and on her web site she warns, "If you feel it imperative to contact me personally, write to [address], but I have no secretary and cannot promise to answer. If you try to use my friends to make contact with me, please be aware that this will prejudice me against you and your project from the start.]

I once sat next to Ursula at a showing of one of the films made from The Lathe Of Heaven: A Novel
, one of my favorite books. She just sat it in the audience with all of us regular people.

If you've never read The Lathe of Heaven, it's about a guy whose dreams comes true. He goes to a therapist, seeking help, but the therapist decides that he can make the world a better place by controlling the main character's dreams.

This does not work out well, as you might guess.

The character lived on Corbett Street, as I did when I was reading the book. I used to wonder which house he lived in.
