Set your sights low and you will meet them

Some people struggle with writers' block. [Full disclosure: the fact that making my living means making my deadline makes writers' block something I literally can't afford.]

The late great Portland poet William Stafford advised his students always to write to their lowest standard. And when someone would corrected him and say you mean the highest, he would say no, your lowest.

Because trying to live up to your highest standards means you start not writing at all.
