Paul Harvey - another little part of my father gone

Paul Harvey was born five years before my father, and they both had long careers in radio and eventually TV. Like my dad, he started working in radio when he was only in high school. He was allowed to fill in reading commercials and news. My dad had a high school sports radio program that broadcast throughout Texas (which is funny in retrospect, because my dad cared nothing for sports). They both had the same resonant low voices that were at one time considered key to breaking into radio at all, although Paul Harvey had that odd staccato delivery and my dad's voice was more honied. Paul Harvey's inflections showed his mid-West roots, and my dad worked hard to keep any trace of the South from his speech.

There were a few years in the late 1980s when I would catch Paul Harvey on the radio and feel envy. My dad had Alzheimers by then and was kind of going through the motions of his life, while Paul Harvey was still going strong even though he was older.

Yesterday I tried to jog Teen's and Teen's BFF about Paul Harvey. "Stand by for news!" delivered with that rising inflection. Next I tried the trademarked delivery of "And now you know ... the rest of the story."

Blank looks from both.
