Independent bookstores may be bucking the economic downturn

Sixteen years ago, a Barnes & Noble opened next to an independent bookstore in Boston. AT that time, there 6,000 independent bookstores nationwide. Now there are 2,200.

But the trend may be changing. Recently, the B&N closed while the other store is still seemingly going strong. “Other small booksellers are withstanding the downturn with the same combination of community involvement, personalized service, events, e-commerce, and such extras as cafés or gifts or used books, that enabled them to survive the onset of megachains and Amazon.com.”
