When I was 12, my parents took me to see my aunt in the musical Coco. She played Katharine Hepburn's assistant. We went out to dinner during that trip. Feeling very grown up, I ordered the mushroom appetizer. I loved mushrooms. But when it came, I hated it.
Because I had never had a fresh mushroom before. And really fresh and canned mushrooms taste nothing alike.
My dad also loved this canned green vegetable, which my mom would buy once a year or so for him as a splurge. We all called it Walla Walla.
It wasn't until I was in college, and called asparagus "Walla Walla" (in front of a large group of people, if my memory is to be trusted) that I learned my parents had for some reason slipped into calling it by the name of the canner.
