I felt totally proud, even though I had nothing to do with the cover. Authors hardly ever get to pick their covers. I’ve had a few covers I’ve objected to, and was very lucky to get one tweaked and another completely changed as a result of my comments. But most of the time, you will be told, “Marketing knows best.” Which is probably true, and even if it isn’t, fat lot of good it will do you to protest.
Now the same librarian has a long article on how book covers change the perception of books. She shows some books with covers that have been redesigned. The description of one book interested two girls, who then fought over the book with the redesigned cover. They were uninterested in the book with the older cover - even though it was exactly the SAME inside.
She also looks at some trends in covers, and what’s cool and what’s not. If you like to think about cover art like I do, click here to read the article.
