The waiting is the hardest part

That's what Tom Petty says, and as usual, he's right. I'm still waiting to hear from my editor about the changes he wants to next year's YA thriller, Fire, Kiss, Electric Chair. My chick lit, Some Assembly Required, is out with a second publisher. My middle-grade novel, The Lunch Table Wars, is over at third publisher. I've got a query into Writer's Magazine. The one thing I know for sure is that I owe the Oregonian a book review and an essay in the next six weeks.

While I'm waiting, I'm working on my new YA thriller called Shadows Walking Backward. It's about a blind girl who is kidnapped when a guy steals her step-mom's car and doesn't realize she's in it, and then panics and keeps her. I will tour a guide dog school on June 5, and on Monday I talked with this really great 17-year-old blind girl named Leslie who is telling me all about how her life works.

Right now, I'm loving writing. And after having written probably a dozen books and sold seven (with more to come, one hopes!), I know that enjoying the writing is the one thing you'd better hope happens. Everything else can be a crap shoot.
