Bologna! What happens at the international fair to sell translation rights

The Bologna Children’s Book Fair is held every March in Italy. A woman who handles subsidiary rights for Farrar, Straus and Giroux Books for Young Readers and Roaring Brook Press talks about what Bologna is like.

“I’ve on occasion gotten an offer or two at the fair.  But this is rare.  Most of the time, even if the editor loves the book, he still needs to show it to the sales and marketing staff back home.  Still, you can always hope!  Whether the response is positive or negative, it’s great to catch up with colleagues who have become friends after years of these half-hour meetings.
