An editor weighs in on "Can you be friends with your editor?"

I've blogged before about whether you can be friends with your agent or editor. An anonymous editor on Gawker agrees with me.

He/she says, "Editors and their authors should pretty much NEVER be Real Friends. Reason 1: You can't trust me. My loyalties are inherently divided. Look. I care about your book. I do! I mean, I wouldn't have acquired it if I didn't. (Uh, probably) But there will come a time in the near future when I will have to put the publishing company's interests before yours. After all, you don't pay me -- they do." Read more here.

Part of me wishes this wasn't true. I would love to have been friends with every editor I've had. But I've never truly managed it. And the more times I've gone around the block, the more I see why that is.
