But they sound exactly the same...

I got pulled out of a story in an old New York Times Sunday Magazine when I read "the peddle pushers I wore."

Ouch! Maybe the copy editor was too young or a man, but it's "pedal pushers" because the shorter length means its easier to push the pedals on bike without worrying about them getting caught. I looked it up, and the term was coined in 1944.

I make that kind of error all the time, but somehow I expect the NYT to be above all that. Even though they ran a correction two days later.
