Giving a voice to the voiceless

Write Around Portland runs volunteer-facilitated writing workshops for people affected by HIV/AIDS, survivors of domestic violence, senior citizens in foster care, individuals recovering from addictions, people with physical and/or mental disabilities, people in prison, teenagers living on the street, low income adults and people who might otherwise not have access to the power of writing because of income, isolation or other barriers.

This project does double duty: giving people a voice and exposing groups of people who are probably not big readers to the power of words.

I read a fascinating collection of essays from one workshop group. They were all people who were about to undergo weight loss surgery because they were morbidly obese. It opened my eyes to my own knee-jerk judgments (to mix bodily metaphors).
