Wedding bells

We went to the wedding of a friend's child last night. This was a first for me. Even though she was 28 - older than I was when I got married - the bride looked so young to me. I first met her about 20 years ago, when I offered to babysit her a few times so her single mom could get some things done. I had no idea how entertain her. None. Or how to talk to her. I still remember the relief I felt when she brought something she could do, some kind of puzzle or game. And I wondered how I would ever deal with being a parent myself.

What I didn't realize then is that we are are making it up as we go along. As my father said, in one of his last coherent sentences to me, "You learn how to do it just by doing it." Maybe that's true about everything.
