Creative or schizophrenic? It may all be a matter of degree

Scientists looking at brain scans have found “striking similarities in the thought pathways of highly creative people and those with schizophrenia.

Both groups lack important receptors used to filter and direct thought,” an article on the BBC website says. It is believed that “it is this barrage of uncensored information that ignites the creative spark. This would explain how highly creative people manage to see unusual connections in problem-solving situations that other people miss. Schizophrenics share this same ability to make novel associations. But in schizophrenia, it results in bizarre and disturbing thoughts.”

When I worked at the front desk of a hospital, there was a local man, a schizophrenic, who walked everywhere listening to his pink plastic radio.

One day I saw the back of the radio. There was an open hole where the batteries should go. But am I that different? I have had dozens of people inside my head, telling me stories.
