About twenty years ago, back before I even had an agent, I submitted my first novel to Algonquin. I still have their rejection letter. At that point in my (non-existent) writing career, it was crushing (there are a lot of crushing moments in the struggle to get published). Even though they mostly published Southern fiction, I thought they were a perfect fit for me, since they published two of my favorite authors, Clyde Edgerton and Larry Brown.
Over the years, Algonquin has been bought by a bigger company and expanded who they publish, but they still retain their ability to pick winners.
