What a difference a vowel sound makes

So I've been wearing this button all week. It says, "I read banned books."

A high school girl at my gym and a checker at Fred Meyer were horrified to hear about that guy who wanted to ban Laurie Halse Anderson's Speak, Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five, and Sarah Ockler's Twenty Boy Summer from the local high school. The high school where his kids don't even go, because they are home schooled (surprise!)

And my Kajukenbo instructor read it out loud. He really liked it and we had a lively discussion about banned books.

The interesting thing is that when he read it aloud, he read it in the past tense, so that it sounded like "red," not "reed." And suddenly the button took on a different meaning for me. It was like saying the person I am was created by the books I read.

Which is so true.
