Eighteen years ago today, an article ran in the New York Times about how many businesses are really slow between Christmas and New Years. Because my agent-to-be's brother worked at NYT, they called her. And she obligingly told them how slow it was..
A few months later, I ran across the article in an old issue of the Times, looked up the agency (in a paper book - imagine!), and thought, "Why not query her?" After all, I had queried over a hundred people by that point, and hardly gotten a nibble.
She read my query, asked for a full, and now we've been together longer than many people have been married.
