What to do when it's not working – or you're not working

Is your writing stuck? Then try:
- Aiming low. Tell yourself all you have to write is 100 words a day for 10 days. Anyone can do that.
- Write crap. Give yourself permission to write crap. (The trick is to write a lot of crap. You can always edit crap. You can't edit nothing.)
- If you've lost interest, find the last place where you were still excited. Rethink the plot from there. Cut the intervening pages and hide them away.
- Change the exterior factors. Write at a different time, in a different place, with a pen instead of a computer. Move your desk. Take a notebook or a laptop and go someplace completely different (preferably without Internet access.)
