Amazon and independent bookstores

I read with interest this blog post about an independent bookstore that refused to host a signing from an author published by a new Amazon imprint.

It says in part: “This week, we received a copy of a new book from an author who was interested in coming in to sign. The problem is that the book is from the new Amazon mystery imprint. They're making an aggressive move into publishing and have lined up a list of new and known authors. The authors are understandably eager and excited and they have a hard time understanding when they run into our brick wall of NO.”

The very first book I ever signed in the whole world was to JB, the guy who wrote the post, back in 1998.

I don't know what the future holds for bookstores. Sometimes I wish I could turn back the clock so that newspapers were still thriving, and record stores, and we had a great independent video rental place just down the block.
