Getting to know you

I'm just starting work (with a co-author) on a new mystery series. In thinking about the characters, I'm using some great techniques from literary agent and author Donald Maas. He suggests you think about:

- What would this character never, ever do?
- What would this character never, ever say?
- What would this character never, ever think?

And then find places in the manuscript where the character will do, say, or think these things. For example, if your character is non-violent, would there ever be a time where he would take a swing at someone? If your character is unbelievably shy, when might she find herself flirting? It's all about created heightened emotions for your characters - and your readers.
