I just heard about a new project in Portland that combines a lot of things we all love: books, supporting banned books, and helping out low-income kids. It’s called UpRise Books Project, and its mission: “to get banned and challenged books directly into the hands of underprivileged middle school and high school students. The reason for this is twofold. One, members of UpRise are vehemently opposed to censorship. And two, and this is where it gets interesting, they firmly believe that the “controversial” subject matter of the books will actually get the kids interested in reading.”
